As the United States nears the historic inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama, a couple things are on many American minds, including among them “God, I’m glad the old president is out” and “God, I hope the new president doesn’t get shot in the head”. Smart thinking, but one has to be prepared for the worst on the eve of such a dramatic change in the country’s history. President George W. Bush left such a hole in the U.S.’s reputation that foreign countries are possibly more excited than ever about who takes the reins.
But was Bush all that bad? You ask most people and they will give you a straight yes or no answer, but in which group does Obama count his opinion? He has been said to claim he thinks Bush is a good guy. Personally, I think this is more of a showing of good will than anything. What does Barack have to lose by showing that he is forgiving of even the worst of people on such a momentous occasion? Nothing. He’s already set to take office, so even if his true opinion is that Bush is a power-hungry douchebag with a place already reserved in the burning pits of Hell, he’s playing his cards right by keeping it under his hat. He can always flip flop later, he wouldn’t be an American politician if he didn’t change his mind when it suited him.
But in the end, no one’s going to care about what Obama thinks of Bush, just that Bush was a lousy president and Obama has already outdone him in the minds of voters without even being sworn in. As long as no one punches a hole through his face with a high-powered rifle, we’ve got a bright future…
2009 is the year of Barack. Welcome to Omerica.
